But take a deep breath if youve got the below 11 things down pat, youre on the right track   Auditions are a fact of life for a serious singer. After all, they are the job interview for the performer! If youre wondering how to prepare for a singing audition, Im here to help you with some important  singing audition tips. Although auditions  can seem daunting, there are plenty of things you can do to feel confident. Here are 11 signs that you’re going to rock your vocal audition! 1. You are rested. True, it may be harder in this day and age to get the suggested eight hours of sleep every night, but the more quality sleep you have the night before, the better! A relaxed body means better sound, as there will be a lot less tension. 2. Your materials are together. This means your sheet music is in the right key and clearly marked for the accompanist. The pages are also back-to-back and neatly organized in a binder. If youre using sound files, they should be  easily accessible and cued up at the correct time. 3. You know your lyrics backwards and forwards! Confidence is key, and knowing that you REALLY have your songs down pat will help you soar through the audition! 4. You’ve done a good warm-up. This means at least 15  to 20  minutes or so of light vocal exercises. It’s best not to do too much more than that, as you risk tiring yourself out. Think basic lip trills, hums, and sirens you can never go wrong with those! It doesnt  needs to be anything fancy. 5. You are dressed appropriately. This means you look professional, but you are also not restricted in any way by  clothing or shoes that are too tight, which can affect your breathing and overall comfort level. Remember a comfortable body means free tone! 6. You’ve picked songs that are right for your voice type. The tessitura of each song fits you like a glove. These songs are so worked into your voice that someone could wake you up at 3am to have you sing themâ€" and you’d still sound good! That’s when you know you have the perfect audition songs for your voice. 7. The “coast is clear” meaning your throat and sinuses! You’re free of congestion and excess phlegm. This means your vocal cords will come together nicely to make beautiful sounds. Problems with congestion? Please don’t panic. Just do more lip trills and sirens! 8. You’re hydrated. This is one of the most important singing audition tips to keep in mind. There’s nothing worse than the feeling of a dry throat when you have to sing! Just make sure you didn’t over-hydrate, because that can dry out your vocal folds, too. One of my favorite things to suggest to singers is to cut an apple into quarters: this has the perfect ratio of water as well as citric acid to break up any light congestion. Its the perfect pre-audition snack! 9. You know what you’re singing about. Now this  is a biggie! Singing the right notes, rhythms, and words is essential, but what good is all of that if you aren’t connecting dramatically? Those that choose to be compelling over perfect  are almost always those that get hired! 10. You realize that the audition starts before you begin singing. This means being kind and respectful to any audition monitors, stage managers, and definitely to your accompanist, should you be working with one! You never know who has the final say in whether or not you get hired or cast. Smile, be friendly, and be prompt! Being a diva will get you nowhere. And lastly…. 11. You are prepared to have FUN. Yes, I said it. Auditions can indeed be fun. You are going to rock any vocal audition you do if you treat it like an intimate performance, rather than something you have  to do. Admit that it would be a shame to ruin it…Rest assured, it is not complicated to take care of a guitar and knowing when to change the strings, just adopt some simple, but essential habits.The guitar’s enemy is the moisture in the air, otherwise known as humidity. Indeed, it should not be forgotten that guitars are made out of wood! One would tend to say that you must be wary of humidity, and while this is true, contrarily the main risk for an instrument is dryness. A guitar that retains moisture will swell, but regain its initial shape afterward. On the other hand, if it dries out too much, the wood shrinks and this is when problems appear: cracks, paint peeling off, etc…To avoid this, store your guitar in its case or cover and never leave it in direct light (especially sunlight), too close to a radiator or excessive heat source.Avoid leaving your first guitar on the beach, i n the sand and in the sun!The strings tend to oxidize. I’m not talking about the classical nylon guitar string, but those of the folk guitar. Metallic strings are also sensitive and not to be neglected. They tend to oxidize with sweaty fingers. To avoid this:Wash your hands before playingAfter playing, clean the strings and under the strings with a soft clothWhen you change the strings, take this time to clean the tuning pegs, on the neck and each fret (metal bars). If the wood is not varnished, dust and deposit risk inlaying the wood. For a gentle cleaning, you will need a soft cloth that’s slightly wet with hot water and a few drops of dishwashing soap. Rub gently to remove dirt encrusted along the frets. Using Podcasts to Boost Learning for Kids with ADHD Plenty of students struggle to pay attention in classrooms. But children with ADHD struggle to focus, process information quickly, and translate information into learning and understanding. At times, traditional classroom teaching methods fall short for kids with ADHD. Fortunately, today there are a many tools and techniques available to supplement classroom teaching for kids with a variety of learning styles. Many of these tools embrace a multi-sensory approach, where kids engage with new material not just visually but also through their other senses of hearing, touch, and sometimes even taste and smell. For kids with ADHD who are auditory learners, Podcasts are a highly accessible and often underutilized resource when it comes to alternative methods of learning new information. Before I share some of my favorite podcasts, heres a little more information about what makes them so great for supplementing learning for kids with ADHD (and kids without ADHD!): Enhanced learning. Engaging hosts, dynamic storytelling, fascinating topics, and connecting big concepts with everyday life are just some of the reasons that the podcast format connects so well with kids and helps them focus and retain detailed information. On top of this, podcasts are often short. They pack a lot of information and entertainment into a snack size format that is just the right length for a child who struggles to pay attention for long periods of time. Reduced screen time. Parents are often encouraged to limit their kids screen time (Ive written a few posts about why this is so important for kids with ADHD. But the inevitable question from parents is: if I remove screen time, whats the alternative? Well, audio podcasts are a great alternative! They offer an engaging experience without a screen. They can go anywhere. Have player, will travel. You can play podcasts in the car, on the bus, on your phone any place that you have an audio player (and some headphones). They cost nothing. Unlike audiobooks, podcasts are often free and sometimes they are even more interesting to kids than an audiobook. Today there is a growing catalog of kid-focused podcasts available, with something that every child with find interesting. 5 Things Every Rising Senior Should Do This Summer 5 Things Every Rising Senior Should Do This Summer College juniors are excited that the academic year is finally coming to an end.   In many ways, college is almost over but there is still a lot to do before graduation. Additionally, once college is officially over students will need to start looking for jobs and adjust to a professional lifestyle. There are some things students can do the summer between their junior and senior year to make the last year of college and the graduation process run smoothly. Unfortunately, students who dont keep track of graduation requirements and other relevant details may end up being a fifth-year senior at the last minute. Its better to stay on top of things and plan ahead to have a great final year as a full-time student. 1. Look through transcripts The first thing rising seniors should do is look through their transcript. Many students find out they are just one or two courses short of graduation, which can prevent them from getting their diploma the following spring. If a student made a miscalculation earlier on, theres still time to make it right before the start of senior year. One option is to take some elective courses over the summer to get extra units. Another option is to take a heavier load of courses starting in the fall. Most universities have a range of what is considered “full time.” It might be better to take five classes instead of four and still graduate on time. If students are at all confused about this process, they are encouraged to speak with one of the academic advisors who can look through everything and make sure the student is on the right track. 2. Arrange work experience Rising seniors are also encouraged to arrange some relevant work experience over the summer. This may consist of an internship or a paid position. Either way, its a good idea to have something productive listed on a resume the summer before graduation. Students who are overwhelmed with what they have already completed throughout the academic year and would rather just relax should know that many internships are only one or two weeks long but still add to a students resume. Its important to have real life on-the-job experience as well as something impressive to put on paper. 3. Volunteer Another great way to beef up that student resume over the summer is to volunteer. Sometimes, jobs within a professional field are simply unavailable to students who have not yet graduated. However, there is almost always a need for a volunteer. This is different from an internship in that students can set a more flexible schedule. For example, if an internship is from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, thats when the intern works. Volunteers, however, can say that theyre available Thursdays and Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m., for example. This is a great option for students who need to attend summer classes or need to have a part-time job to make ends meet (READ: 5 Ways to Survive Spring Semester as a Senior). 4. Meet with professors and TAs Its a fabulous idea for students to meet with their professors or teaching assistants over the summer or as the term is wrapping up. This doesnt have to be a formal meeting in the professors office; it can be a simple meeting over a cup of coffee on campus. Professors and TAs can be a great resource when it comes to planning an entry-level career search or looking for an internship. Most of them have great connections and knowledge that other people simply dont possess. Also, meeting with professors gives students an opportunity to ask any additional questions. If nothing else this meeting will let the professor know the student is genuinely interested in their major field of study and will maintain a professional connection for the future (READ: 3 Warning Signs of Senioritis). 5. Arrange and informational interview Another great thing for rising seniors to do over the summer is arrange an informational interview with somebody in the field they plan to go into. This should not be confused with an official job interview. An informational interview is simply asking someone who is already a seasoned professional to provide some mentoring or advice. This gives students the opportunity to put questions without the pressure of having a full-time job on the line. Summer is the perfect time to catch-up and get ahead on your schooling.
